Tragedy of a Papaya

Submitted By: AJIT V GODAKHINDI

----------------------------------

Two years ago, unseen,a sapling stood in the corner of an empty plot. Food waste piled near its roots— yet no one noticed its quiet growth. A slender stem rose, crowned with a graceful crown of leaves. It asked for nothing— no water, no manure, no guard. Unafraid of cows, pigs, strays, or storms, it simply lived. Half a year passed.Flowers bloomed, tiny fruits appeared, Green turning to gold, sweetness ripening for all. The papaya knew no language, no caste, no religion, no region. Neighbors plucked its gifts one by one, smiling at its sweetness, One year passed—the tree grew tall, against all odds, its treasures beyond easy reach. Greedy hands stretched, sticks struck, and the lean trunk broke. Now the papaya lies uprooted, its life ended not by storms or drought, but by the very ones it fed. A silent death, the tragedy of a beautiful selfless tree.
